Birds were moving in small flocks in the central Rockies this past week. Several storm systems put some early finches down in our area, including a handful of Pine Siskins and Cassin's Finches. These are not the large flocks we will see on the cams in a few weeks, but they were still an exciting revelation.
Hairy Woodpeckers are typically common here at the Roost. This winter, sadly, our Hairy Woodpeckers have disappeared. In the past two weeks, three Hairy Woodpeckers (2 female and 1 male) have appeared at the bird cams! White-breasted Nuthatch have also made a resurgence after a winter with very few appearances.
In the highlight video above, you will get some close-ups of one of our two frequent Steller's Jays (Pomp & Circumstance), some Pine Siskins, and a special moment with a Cassin's Finch.
If you tune into the Junco Gym™ after reading this, expect to see a horde of juncos. We are currently experiencing a Dark-eyed Junco flock numbering well over 50 individuals!
